Best of the Best

UK-based former Zimbabwe Saints, Amazulu and national team goalkeeper, Muzondiwa “Lazy Mzo” Mugadza, gives us his own way best of the best.

Best team played for

Amazulu and that is for obvious reasons. Usuthu was an ambitious outfit which raised the bar of competition in the Premier league. They became the team to beat which was the interesting part.

Best opponent faced

Internationally I would say Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha and locally, I think on a good day, anyone could be the best.

Best goalkeeper in the world currently

Joe Hart (Manchester City) and Iker Cassillas (Real Madrid). These are names that come to my head but honestly every keeper has different attributes to the game so I would say anyone brave to stand between the posts is the best.

Best save made

I have one game that comes to mind. I played for Amazulu with a swollen knee against Caps United, but I managed to dive airborne to make a save from a free kick outside the box. There are a couple more I would put up there as the best besides this one.

Best match I played

Against Nigeria in the 1996 Olympic qualifiers (Zimbabwe lost on both legs) is top.

I played the game without the knowledge that my sister had died back home and the news was kept from me until after the game.

Best coach played under

Every coach is good in his/her own way, Gibson Homela, Charles Mhlauri, Barry Daka, Sunday Marimo, Clemens Westerhoff, Marc Duvillard, Reinhard Fabisch, Ali Dube and Jani Gwede come out to tops to me because these areon topsys who nurtured us and got less credit but in all fairness the senior coaches where dealing with a finished product. Junior coaches get less credit for their fantastic job.

Best venue played in

Barbourfields. BF had that buzz about it, especially when playing Bosso.

The atmosphere was electrifying. I miss all that and the whistling of fans in the Soweto stand!
