In a statement on the RBZ website, Gono said Kereke was being reassigned to broader responsibilities elsewhere, but did not elaborate further.

Kereke served at the Central Bank for eight years. During most of this time the country witnessed the world’s highest hyper-inflation on record.

Kereke hit the media headlines last year for suing journalists for defamation. The case is still pending. He has also been accused of raping an 11-year-old girl and threatening her parents with a gun.

He denies both accusations, and the police appear reluctant to pursue the investigations. The Attorney General’s office has been accused of dragging its feet with regard to the case.

A successful businessman in his own right, Kereke runs a medical aid company, private medical centre and a thriving tobacco farm.
