PM to visit Chiadzwa

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai will visit the Controversial Chiadzwa diamond fields for the first time today.

He has been repeatedly barred from the area. In July he was turned away by government officials who insisted he did not have clearance from the Zanu (PF)-controlled Mines Ministry.

Human rights campaigners have urged him to look into on-going abuses, mainly by the army and the police, at the mines.

“The PM must talk to workers about their rights which are being infringed, and about the beatings they face,” said Mutare based human rights defender, Farai Maguwu.

Political analyst Clifford Mashiri said: “Chiadzwa has been demarcated a ZANU (PF) area. I think all they want is for Tsvangirai to call for the measures affecting diamonds sales to be lifted.”
