Mahachi told Parliament’s committee on natural resources and environment that Chitungwiza Town Council was releasing 60 megalitres of raw sewage a day into the Lake, but that the city’s main sewage treatment plant at Firle could only process 54 megalitres of its 144 megalitres capacity.
Mahachi said the city was using nine chemicals costing $2 million a month to ensure that residents were receiving safe water.
Mahachi said the entire city sewage system had collapsed and that council had to secure funding from central government, African Development Bank and China for expansion.
