Student Activists Released

Three student activists Pride Mkono, Tryvine Musokeri and Tinashe Mutimbanyoka appeared today the 17th of February before a Gweru Magistrate after spending two days in prison.

They are being charged with assault and violating the Public Order and Security Act POSA. Charges arise from a gathering at the Midlands State University where they had been addressing students.

They are accused of assaulting MSU guards and addressing students without informing the police in accordance with POSA requirements .They have been released on free bail and will appear on the 2nd of March.

The Students Solidarity Trust condemns the selective use of POSA to silence activists and muzzle free speech. POSA continues to be in violation of constitutional rights to freedom of speech, expression and association. The Trust continues to urge the state to ensure that the law is apply equally and that students do not bear the brunt of such unjust pieces of legislation.
