Taxis out of pocket

Bus and commuter operators in the city were out of pocket after being diverted from their normal routes to ferry Zanu
(PF) supporters to Sakubva stadium for President Robert Mugabe’s 88th birthday.

Operators who spoke to this paper said they were forced to carry party
supporters for free.

“I was just told to carry party supporters to the stadium without
getting fuel or payment. We are struggling to make ends meet, but these people rip us off,” said one
driver who declined to be named.

Operators who took their vehicles off the road were blacklisted and
told that their permits would be withdrawn.

The drivers were at the mercy of drunken Zanu (PF) party youths who demanded to be transported free of charge. Even South African-owned buses such as Massmerry were hijacked and
forced to ferry people from high density surburbs to the stadium.

The staff said they were just taking orders from the Zanu (PF) officials.
