They are finally out

There was jubilation at Chikurubi Maximum and Harare Central remand prisons yesterday evening after the release of seven MDC members. Relatives, friends, civil society leaders, lawyers and MDC Youth Assembly members and leadership gathered at the gates of Chikurubi and Harare remand to welcome their colleagues.

After staying for nine months in remand prison Phinias Nhatarikwa, Stanford Mangwiro, brothers Lazarus and Stanford Maengahama, Harare province YA Deputy Organising Secretary Rebecca Mafikeni and Harare province YA Gender Rep Yvonne Musarurwa were released yesterday around 2000hrs. They were given bail on Friday late afternoon by Deputy Judge President Malaba.

They were arrested in May on false charges of murdering a police office Inspector Petros Mutedza in Glenview at a popular beer outlet. This is a political move by ZANU PF using the police to try to destabilise MDCYA programmes as we are sombrely preparing for elections and celebrations for our victory. We urge the police and all state institutions to act professionally for us to build a better Zimbabwe.

Present at Chikurubi was MDCYA National Spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo, National Executive member James Chidhakwa, Harare YA Deputy Chairperson Stanley Manyenga, lawyers Kwaramba and Jeremiah Bhamu, ZLHR Director Iren Petras and staff among others.
