The late Utakataka Express founder began his career in 1988.He played in numerous bands and honed his art in Kwekwe before joining Shirichena Jazz Band as a session musician, helping to release two albums and a single.
Moyo assembled his Utakataka Express charges in 1996 before releasing his first solo album, Vimbo. He is well known for hits such as Samanyemba and Muchina Muhombe.
His son Peter (21) has stepped ably into his father’s shoes. “Practise is what we believe in and so far it seems we are geared for success,” he says.
Peter Moyo went live with the band for the first time during a send-off ceremony for his father at Mbizo Stadium. To date he has partnered renowned musicians like Alick “Extra-Basso” Macheso, Jazz Guru Oliver “Samanyanga” Mutukudzi and Sulumani Chimbetu among others in exciting live shows countrywide. Together with local musicians like Ronnie Mudhindo and Raeez king Bantuman I, Peter has wowed Kwe Kwe fans in local stadia and night-life spots with his father’s hits.
The departure of two senior band members, Congolese chanter Shiga Shiga and bass guitarist maestro Spencer Khumbulani. “I have no hard feelings. Actually I am almost through with filling the gaps left by the two,” he said.
Bantuman I, who owns a local music academy the Utakataka Express usually uses for practice, believes the world should stop comparing Peter with his father.
“He is own man and people should simply take him like that. Soon he will be producing his own music and I have no doubt he is destined for great heights,” he said.
