The youths have been demanding payment from the touts who operate along the Harare Road, Macs garage along Masvingo Road and the pickup point along Leopold Takawira Street in the city centre.

On Saturday the touts convened a meeting with local Member of Parliament, Tabitha Khumalo, over the issue.

“Zanu (PF) youths have threatened to remove us from the pickup points and take over our jobs if we fail to pay them $100 every week. The youths have threatened violence if we do not pay the money,” said Farai Murenga, a tout along the Bulawayo /Harare road.

Khumalo confirmed meeting the touts.

“The touts have approached me seeking assistance over the issue. I have told them that what the youths are doing is illegal and they should report them to the police,” said Khumalo, who is also the deputy MDC-T spokesperson.

Efforts to get a comment from the Zanu(PF) Bulawayo provincial chairperson, Isaac Dakamela, were fruitless.
