ZNWC castigates use of children in violence

The Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children has castigated the use of children in perpetrating political violence.

This comes hard on the heels of growing reports countrywide that teenagers have gone on the rampage, claiming to be war-veterans and calling themselves comrades as they beat up people suspected of supporting the MDC-T. Child Development Advisor, Musa Chibwana, told a recent workshop it was unacceptable for children to be used in politics.

“It is totally unacceptable to use children to torture political opponents,” he said.

The council’s director, Taylor Nyanhete, said children should not be used in any conflict situation, “neither should they be used in advancing any form of political mileage”.

“Where such cases happen and children get arrested, we implore the Social Welfare Department to intervene,” he said.
