ARV drugs expire

Hospitals are stocking expired HIV/AIDS drugs despite a backlog of more than 100 000 patients in need of Anti-Retroviral drugs.

Advocacy and Communications Officer for the Zimbabwe National Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS, Paidamoyo Magaya, and National AIDS Council Chief Executive Officer, Dr Tapiwa Magure, said the situation was sad.

“About 116, 118 adults and 12,420 children are reported to be on the waiting list. This is not good if it is indeed true those drugs are expiring,” said Magaya.

Health Minister Henry Madzorera said over the weekend that it was not surprising to find government hospitals stocking expired drugs because of lack of funds to carry out audits on time.
