Biti meets Mugabe

Finance Minister Tendai Biti held a secret meeting with President Robert Mugabe to discuss the controversial issue of diamond revenues from Marange, which are still not flowing consistently into state coffers amid fears of massive looting.Biti and his

MDC-T colleagues fear Mugabe is building a war chest from diamond revenue ahead of elections. Biti expects $600-million from the gem exports to cover part of this year’s $4-billion budget. He says lack of transparency, accountability and looting of diamonds has made his job a nightmare. A paltry $5-million was realised in February, way below the $41.5-million target.
