Mutare magistrate, Sekai Chiwundura, last week granted council order and powers to demolish the illegal settlement.Responding to question from ward 13 councilor Tendai Nemarare during a council meeting, on why the council was taking so long to action the court order, Muzawazi said he was approached by war veterans who wanted clarification on the matter, but he said he told them that no amount of pressure would change council’s position.
Muzawazi said the court decision was in the interest of the public and council will enforce the order without fear of favour.
“We can’t be seen compromising the court that we applied for,” he said.
Last year in November, city of Mutare issued a two week notice for the settlers to vacate the area, but members of the war veterans defied the order, saying the issue was political and they had the right to occupy the said land.
Despite the recent order, the settlers said they were not moved and vowed to stay put until government gives them alternative land.
