Crackdown in Malawi

The space for civil society to operate independently in Malawi is sharply shrinking, warned international civil society network CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation.

In an impending crackdown, members of civil society and the media are being openly intimidated to prevent them from criticizing the government of President Binguwa Mutharika, after the President’s Office recently issued a public statement warning both the civil society and the media houses against demeaning, insulting and accusing the President.
