Hockey tourney kicks off

Ten hockey teams from each of the country’s provinces are set to participate in a national developmental tournament at the Mutare Sports Club this weekend.

The tournament will be in preparation for a broader regional tournament scheduled for Malawi this month-end.

Tournament organiser, Tim Curry, said it was meant to sharpen and strengthen the teams for the regional showpiece.

He encouraged the corporate world to sponsor the game, which was suffering viability problems at a grassroots level.

“Participants and supporters should also come in numbers to support. We want to use this tournament to lay a foundation for those that are coming up and government should support the sport, which does not have financial sponsors,” he said.

He stressed the need for more members to boost the team and encouraged students from local schools to play the game. He bemoaned the shortage of hockey fields, which forced them to use basketball pitches and tennis courts.

“This region is supposed to have a hockey stadium, like Harare which has Magamba stadium, while Bulawayo has Khumalo stadium, hence our appeal to Mutare City Council,” he said.
