Journalist arrested, appeared in court

NewsDay journalist Moses Matenga who was arrested in Chiadzwa after he was found in possession of a suspicious stone appeared before Mutare magistrate for an initial remand.

Matenga who was arrested during a civic society tour to the diamond field on Wednesday is facing charges of illegal possession of precious mineral.

He was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Anniah Ndiraya and was remanded to 16 March on a $20 bail.

Truman Joma appeared for the State.

Joma told the court that Matenga went to Chiadzwa diamond area during a civic society tour.

He said when Matenga arrived at Marange Resources Concession, he was spotted by a security guard, Vengai Zvinavashe, on CC TV monitoring system opening his wallet and then swallowed a stone.

The guard alerted other security details at the entrance who conducted a search and found Matenga with a stone in his hand leading to his arrest.

The stone was taken to Mineral Assayor`s office in Harare for verification. Matenga was represented by a local lawyer, Chengetai Zvauya of Bere Brothers Legal Practitioners.
