Living like animals

Scores of Zimbabwean who attended a Zapu-initiated Human Rights Day ceremony here poured scorn on President Robert Mugabe and Zanu (PF) for depriving them of basic freedoms back home.

The exiles said they were now “living like animals” in neighbouring countries, with children being raped while trying to cross the border, while others have died on the way to seeking a better life. “We have for long been treated like zombies by the ruling elite. Those at home live in fear and cannot exercise their rights, while others are living as second-class citizens in foreign countries. Our non-negotiable position is that human rights should not be sacrificed for political aggrandizement, especially so as the next elections are imminent, “said Zapu spokesman, Busani Bhalagwe.
