The government of Zimbabwe spends time crafting repressive media laws and the responsible Minister and his officials are arrogantly ducking from implementing the GPA.

Speaking at the launch of the Conditions for a Sustainable Election in Zimbabwe at Crown Plaza in Harare, MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai said the responsible ministry should instead promote the free flow of information.

“Media reforms as agreed in the GPA have not been implemented and the responsible Minister and his officials are arrogantly ducking away. They have instead gone further to ban foreign newspapers and to grant radio licenses to companies aligned to a political party,” said Tsvangirai.

“We have instead become a laughing stock because in this day and age, you cannot have a government that spends time crafting laws that control information rather than facilitate its dissemination!” he said.

Tsvangirai said his party is not afraid of an election but will not be forced into a sham election.

“We are not afraid of an election but we will not definitely participate in a war. It is because of this that the MDC will not be stampeded into a sham election without the guide of the necessary reforms,” he said.

He said the party is aware of the plot to frustrate and force the MDC out of the transitional government.

“We are aware of the plot to frustrate us, to wear us down and force us out of this transitional arrangement, but we have a mandate and a covenant with the people,” he said.

Speaking at the same occasion the Speaker of Parliament Lovemore Moyo said the party is technically and politically prepared for the forthcoming election.

“The party has finished all the technical work towards candidate selection and promoting voters’ education and I can confirm that we are happy that we have progressed well. However, there is need to change the administration of ZEC which reflects a partisan stance,” said Moyo.
