Mtukudzi to headline HIFA

Oliver Mtukudzi will again be the highlight at this year’s HIFA scheduled to open on May 06 for six days.

According to HIFA’s website, he will return to HIFA this year on the Telecel Main Stage in a show to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Mtukudzi is Zimbabwe’s biggest selling artist – a giant of African pop worldwide – whose music has been the soundtrack for many people growing up and living in Zimbabwe over the last three decades.

His appeal crosses generations and international boundaries. ‘Tuku’ has a very special place in the hearts of his many fans at home and around the world.

“We present this concert as a celebration of everything that ‘Tuku’ is for all of us as a nation and to honour his 60th birthday this year. He will be joined by several HIFA 2012 artists, including Ismael Lo and members of Publish the Quest, for this special fireworks concert.”

Mtukudzi is the UNICEF Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Eastern and Southern Africa and in this role focuses on young people’s development and HIV and AIDS prevention. His devoted following pays heed to his socially conscious advice and his performance will celebrate his birthday, his many contributions to HIFA, past, present and future, and his contribution to Africa.

HIFA is an annual festival and workshop programme that showcases the very best of local, regional and international arts and culture in a comprehensive festival programme of theatre, dance, music, circus, street performance, spoken word, visual arts.

HIFA has come to be seen as an important symbol of something positive about Zimbabwe, unifying Zimbabweans at a time of ideological conflict and political uncertainty bringing huge audiences together to celebrate something positive – the healing and constructive capacity of the arts.
