Civil servants are at the centre of sexual harassment allegations involving school children at Muzokomba High school. Authorities have remained tight-lipped on the measures being taken to stop the practice.

The girls lodge in nearby houses as the school is situated far from their homes.Muzokomba District Centre services two major growth points in Buhera South, Murambinda and Birchenough Bridge.

A student who identified herself as Mercy told The Zimbabwean that civil servants visited their homes asking for sex. Others preferred to take the girls out of town so that their wives would not find out.

Another student, Patience, said: “We have approached the school authorities but nothing has been done so far to protect us.” School teachers who refused to be named confirmed the allegations but said they were in the dark as to what measures were being taken to stop them.

“Yes I know that it is true,” said one teacher. “I don’t know what is being done to protect them, I only know that we have been told not to tolerate it,” he said. The child member of parliament for Buhera South and the school’s head girl, Eugein Madhiri, denounced the harassment, saying the officials had traumatised the girls.

“I have talked to the head master because most of the students are complaining about this issue,” she said. School authorities were not available for comment and the headmaster was said to have gone to attend a monthly meeting at Murambinda growth point.

The District Education Officer was also not available for comment.
