ZESA disconnects Marondera Municipality

MARONDERA - The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority has cut off power supplies to the local authority here for non payment of electricity bills.

Council owed the power supplier more than $100 000 in unpaid bills – including monthly charges for ZESA meter points.

“ZESA is in the process of cutting off supplies to defaulters around the country without fear or favour. Even top government officials and institutions were affected by the disconnections,” said a highly placed source.

The Mayor, FaraiNyandoro, said: “Yes, we were disconnected by the power utility but an acceptable payment plan was agreed upon by the two parties. Council is now paying $5 000 per month to settle the bill.”

The council plans to identify all ZESA meter points with the intention of weeding out those that are no longer being used and the charges would be subtracted from the arrears.
