Call to expand hydro power scheme

The Mont Clair Hydro Power Scheme in Juliasdale is only benefitting a few outlets and should be extended to other commercial and state farm estates, says a senior District Council official.

“Nyanga district has vast water resources which can be tapped for power generation and irrigation purposes for the benefit of the communities and farm estates,” said Zephania Jaravaza, Chief Executive Officer of Nyanga Rural District Council, during a recent visit by the Zimbabwe National Environment Trust.

Zimbabwe Environmental Lawyers Association Director, Mutuso Dhliwayo, said communities should benefit from water resources around them.

ZIMNET Executive Director, Joseph Tasosa, said: “The country still has lot of ground to cover to generate power and create irrigation based agriculture. The Mont Clair project really needs to be expanded just like the Honde Valley Power Project, which is covering more areas in terms of both irrigation and power generation.”

President Robert Mugabe recently said during World Water Day commemorations in Masvingo that dam development and the irrigation sector have been underfunded since Independence, leading to perpetual food shortages.
