In an exclusive interview, Tham Mpofu, Meikles Regional Commercial Director, said the hotel’s northern wing had been closed to the public for renovations expected to be completed by January next year.
“All 132 bedrooms and suites in the northern wing were cleared of fittings and furnishings and the bathrooms demolished. The banqueting and function rooms on the second floor were also closed and stripped for refurbishment,” he said.
The southern wing will be also be refurbished while the popular La Fontaine Restaurant will undergo a facelift, according to Mpofu. Meikles, which opened in 1915, is part of the Meikles Africa Limited Group owned by John Moxon.
Nyathi said the centre will also have a documentation section where all research into areas such as traditional games and food will be documented.
