Violence: MDC-T youth leader acquitted

MARONDERA - MDC youth leader, Tichafa Mayora, accused of taking part in intra-party political violence at Two Boy Shopping Centre last month, has been acquitted by a disciplinary hearing.

Four party officials cleared have now been cleared – Johannes Razunguza (District Organizer), Tonderai Chitaguda (Vice District Organizer) and Nyahanana (Secretary), were acquitted last month.

Nine other accused including Mayor Farai Nyandoro, Councillor Carlos Mudzongo among others, appeared at the hearing last Wednesday as investigations continue.

Following the violence, 15 party activists were arrested by police and detained for a week before they were granted $300 bail each with strict reporting conditions. Though Nyandoro was not directly involved in the scuffle, he is accused of funding the fight. He denies the charge.

Residents remain anxious about the possible outcome of the hearing. “We invested faith in MDC and whatever the outcome, the people’s democratic project should not be derailed. We hope the decision making body will put peoples’ interests ahead of individuals when they give the final judgement.
