$14 million worth of food aid lies idle

Food worth $14 million donated by China is lying idle at the Grain Marketing Board’s Norton silos, the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Xin hun Kang, has revealed.

“Our donation made early this year, which includes rice and wheat, should have been given to the needy but is still lying idle at GMB Norton,” he said at a ceremony at Kubatana Primary School in Epworth recently.

A senior official at the Harare GMB Depot who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the donation but said they were awaiting government approval before distribution could take place. The Zimbabwe NGO Network for International Exchange, which also works with NGOs in China, suspects that Zanu (PF) is hoarding the food in order to buy votes during election time. “If elections were to be held this year, Zanu (PF) would use the food aid for vote buying purposes in the rural areas,” said an employee of the organisation who preferred anonymity.
