Pressure group lambasts police

The security forces are protecting members of Zanu (PF) and harassing their opponents, the Zimbabwe Civil Society Solidarity Trust has said.

“The police are not acting in accordance with its role as a custodian of the law and protector of human rights,” said the chairman of the trust, Francis Makoni, in an interview this week. “The army that should protect the citizens of Zimbabwe is at the forefront of brutalizing innocent citizens perceived to be MDC supporters.”

He added that the private media was also being victimised for being critical of President Robert Mugabe and Zanu (PF).

“It is sad that journalists writing for the private media have been arrested and tortured for writing critical articles relating to Zanu (PF) and Mugabe. Journalists have the duty to entertain, educate and inform the masses with any fear or favour,” Makoni said.

ZCSST condemned the police and judiciary for targeting top MDC-T officials. It said they were being deliberately humiliated and detained under inhumane conditions.
