Zanu (PF) support dwindles

Attendance at Zanu (PF) meetings is dwindling here as people no longer want to identify themselves with President Robert Mugabe and his cronies, a police source at Nyamaropa police post has said.

Before the 2008 sham elections, Nyamaropa area in Nyanga North constituency was a stronghold of Zanu (PF), but now it is under Douglas Mwonzora of MDC-T.

“It is surprising that in the run-up to the 2005 and 2008 elections Zanu (PF) was always seeking clearance to hold rallies, but now the party is not holding rallies because the people have shifted their allegiance to MDC-T,” said the police officer.

In its desperate attempts to win back supporters, Hubert Nyanhongo is hijacking food distribution meetings to preach Zanu (PF) politics. Nyanhongo is also allegedly using party militia and war veterans to force-march villagers to rallies.

Headmen in the area are also getting involved. They have been threatening to evict locals from their homes and denying them food aid when they fail to attend the rallies.
