The Organ on National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration must work to ensure a ban on political party slogans that are divisive and constitute hate speech, says Mavambo/Kusile/ Dawn party, led by Simba Makoni.

“We are a party of peace but operating in an environment pervaded by political beasts that survive on hate speech and political chants that seek the demise of opponents. Our call to the National Healing Organ is to please ban such slogans,” said Harare Provincial Chairperson Francis Zimunya last week.

“We seek to build a society where we are all equal before the law and a Zimbabwe where all vestiges of not only colonialism but also black imperialism are removed. So you will notice that the slogans that I am talking about either constitute hate speech or are shadows of division and hate. Let us get rid of them before the next elections. We can do better and create slogans that bring our people together, despite political differences,” said Zimunya.

He said parliament should legislate against hate language but it was the duty of all Zimbabweans to change the way they view political opponents and competition for political office.

Zanu (PF) has been accused of propagating hate speech and forcing the Public Broadcaster to spew hate messages against opponents of President Robert Mugabe. Recently, Mugabe had to intervene and castigated Media, Information and Publicity Minister, Webster Shamu, for letting the public media continuously subject Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to unwarranted attacks, after the MDC leader complained to him.
