Census needs $37 million

The Zimbabwe Central Statistics Agency, ZIMSTAT, responsible for conducting the national census next month, is rocked with financial challenges and transport problems.

“We have received $22 million from government, but we require $37 million to carry out the programme. We are still negotiating with donors,” said Director General, Mutasa Dzinotizei this week.

Zimbabwe needs reliable statistics to craft evidence-based policy decisions as it has gone for a decade without good qualitative data. Previous censuses showed that in 1982 the population of was 7.6 million, 10.4 million in 1992 and 11.6 million in 2002.

Dzinotizei said a total workforce of 40,000 people was required for the Census. Training of enumerators began in June and is ongoing.
