Manicua is the father of Ilidio Manicua, one of the five people whose detention in connection with the kidnappings was announced on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the General Command of the police force, Pedro Cossa.
At the time, Cossa declined to give the names of those arrested, but he did confirm that one was the son of a deputy commissioner. This led to speculation, and even to the circulation of mobile phone text messages naming other officers as the father of the alleged kidnapper.
The police appear to have released the name of Manicua to “O Pais”, in order to quash this speculation.
According to the police sources cited by “O Pais”, Rafael Manicua lives in the same house as his father. He is believed to have brought back home large sums of money resulting from the ransoms.
The police want to know whether Ilidio Manicua was aware of his son’s activities, or was even an accomplice in them.
