Diasporans mark Mzilikazi Day

Zimbabweans as far afield as Indianapolis will later this month commemorate King Mzilikazi Day in honour of the founding monarch of the Ndebele Kingdom.

The event will take place at the Indianapolis Airport in the United States on August 31 and will be held under the theme, “Ubuntu: Rekindling Togetherness”.

Thokozile Mkwanazi, spokesperson of the organisation responsible for the event, said it was in line with ongoing efforts to unite Diasporans in the region.

Mzilikazi established the Ndebele Kingdom in what is now Bulawayo in 1826 after he took his tribe, the Khumalo, on an 800-kilometre long journey from Zululand to the area. David Livingstone once referred to him as one of the most impressive leaders he encountered on the African continent. He died in 1868 and was buried in a cave at Entumbane in the Matobo Hills.
