First iron ore exports by end of year

The Indian company Damodar Ferro plans to export its first shipment of iron ore from its mine in Lalaua district, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, by the end of this year, according to a report in the Maputo daily “Noticias”.

This shipment consists of 28,000 tonnes of magnetite already stored at the company’s premises. The ore will be shipped to China, and will mark Mozambique’s entrance into the world iron market.

The ore will be taken by rail, from the station at Iapala, in Ribaue district, to the port of Nacala.

The amount of ore stockpiled at the mine (in the locality of Namarrepo) and at the Iapala station is growing continually. The mine is operating uninterruptedly and has an installed capacity of 75 tonnes an hour. The main bottleneck is a shortage of appropriate locomotives and wagons to move the magnetite to Nacala.

Damodar Ferro has also announced its interest in exploring for other iron ore deposits. It has promised to send, within the next few days, the necessary documentation to the Ministry of Mineral Resources for obtaining authorisation to explore in the coastal district of Memba (also in Nampula), and in Alto Molocue, in the neighbouring province of Zambezia.
