The Warriors were Monday beaten 1-0 by Botswana’s Zebras who are using this tournament to prepare for their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final qualifying round match against Mali.
Botswana were the surprise qualifiers for the 2012 Nations Cup finals in Gabon and the Equatorial Guinea where unfortunately they did not win a game in a tough group that also included Ghana.
The Warriors have sent a makeshift side to the tournament that also includes Namibia. Zimbabwe are also using this competition to look at the local players for consideration for national duty in Zimbabwe’s Nations Cup qualifier against Angola’s Black Antelopes.
Of the team that is in Botswana, goalkeeper Marlon Jani, striker Nelson Mazivisa, Charles Sibanda, Rodwell Chinyengetere, and Arnold Chaka have played for the Warriors before.
There has been suggestions from other quarters that national team coach Rahman Gumbo should focus more on the domestic talent as most of his foreign based players are failing to deliver as evidenced by Zimbabwe’s poor run in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Zimbabwe’s next game is against Namibia before they return home for the proposed international friendly match against Zambia’s Chipolopolo set for August 15.
