The odour has chased patrons away from the motel. According to Environmental Management Agency Public Relations Manager, Steady Kangata, during a recent tour with journalists, Chitungwiza Town Council has been dumping raw sewage into the river.
The polluted water eventually finds its way into Lake Chivero, Harare’s main water source poses a serious health threat to the city’s millions of residents.
“A lot of potential clients are shunning the motel and we have lost a lot of business. Clients complain that the odour from Manyame river is unbearable,” a group of women who stay at the motel complained.
Kangata told journalists that the municipal authority continued discharging the effluent into the water body, despite warnings. Chitungwiza municipality is battling with an old reticulation system because it does not have the money to carry our upgrades and repairs. – Wallace Mawire
