Social media set to reward musician

Prominent Afro-Jazz sensation, Edith “WeUtonga”Katiji has gone into overdrive using social media such as facebook to appeal for at least $8000 from friends and well wishers to travel to Kenya where she is scheduled to perform at the “Blankets and Wine” showcase from September 2.

“By contributing an amount of $10 (United States dollars), you will enable us to travel to Kenya,l realised that l have five thousand facebook friends and if each one of them donates at least $10 my tour will definitely come to fruition,” explained Katiji.

The musician pleaded with well-wishers to make her debut tour out of the country possible as she has been concentrating on local shows like the recent Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) where she last performed in April.

She said,” This will be the first time for the band to travel outside of Zimbabwe and be the music ambassadors.”

In an interview with The Zimbabwean recently, she confirmed the tour and indicated that her eight piece band desperately needs the money in order to participate at the annual event.

”I can confirm that we are looking for the money and as of now we only have a month to raise the money,” she said.

Blankets and Wine is a monthly picnic style music festival in Mamba village in Nairobi Kenya with the Maasai.

The event started November 2008 and has grown steadily to be one of the highly anticipated music events in Nairobi and will be running for the fourth year this year.

The band released Utonga, their much hyped debut album in 2010 and it was immediately described by music pundits and industry professionals as a success.

“I am very happy and highly expectant of good things to come out of this tour”, Edith said.”The band and I are working flat out in the rehearsal room to make sure we leave no stone unturned in making the most of this experience in so far as our performance is concerned. Remember this is Edith WeUtonga going, but it means a lot for the country as Zimbabwe will be judged by the way we perform. These are just some of the pressures that come with touring”.

Indeed Edith carries a burden of impressing on her shoulders, seeing as they say ‘the first cut is the deepest’. However, having played at numerous domestic festivals, including Intwasa, Chimanimani Arts Festival, Ibumba and HIFA – where this year she had a double main stage act on the closing day including featuring on Oliver Mtukudzi closing a how alongside Ismaelo – Edith should have measurable stage experience to carry this East Africa excursion through.
