Tsvangirai secures water project funds

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has secured $864 million from Exim Bank of China to revitalise the Matabeleland water project. His week-long visit was at the invitation of the Chinese government.

Announcing the development last week on the sidelines of the commissioning of a $50 million water and sanitation programme funded by UK Aid to be implemented by UNICEF in Tsholotsho, Tsvangirai accused the government before the coalition of 2009 of failing to prioritise the project.

Water Resources and Development Minister, Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, confirmed that work has started on the project.

“We have been able to get an allocation of US$864 million from Exim Bank of China. The Chinese are here right now as I speak and are working on the modalities,” he said.
