Five Masvingo Activists Appear In Court:

Five Masvingo Polytechnic students Tatenda Sibanda, Evans Tangirai, Blessing Makwachatu, Desire Matambo and Samuel Darikirai appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Mr Mudzongachiso on the 10th of July. They are facing charges of public violence and malicious damage to property. Their charges arose from their participation in a demonstration against an early registration deadline of May 31st. The five were picked up at the Masvingo Polytechnic dinning hall and they were taken to Chikato police station were they where detained.

Their case will continue on the 24th of July when witnesses will continue with their testimonies.

The prosecutor is Mr M Rusere whilst their defence lawyer is Mr M Gwasira.

Six ZINASU Activists’ Application Dismissed:

Six ZINASU activists Pride Mkono, Tinashe Mtyaso, Tinashe Chisaira, Francis Mufambi, Tryvine Musokeri and Joram Chikwadze appeared before Harare Magistrate Don Ndirowei on the 11th of July for the ruling of their application for discharge. Their application was dismissed and they will appear on the 18th for continuation of their trial. Their lawyer Obey Shava had made an application for discharge at the close of the state’s case as the witnesses had given conflicting statements in their testimonies. The six are facing charges of Disorderly Conduct in a public place as defined in section 41 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

It is the state’s case that on the 21st of March this year, the six together with about 30 other accomplices who are still at large gathered outside the Magistrates’ court in solidarity with Welcome Zimuto, Antoneta Choto, Munyaradzi Gwisai, Edson Chakuma, Hopewell Gumbo and Tatenda Mombeyarara whose sentence was to be handed down that day. It is alleged the ZINASU activists were singing obscene songs and chanting slogans, they also threw fliers inscribed, “Freedom for Zimuto, Choto, Gwisai, Chakuma, Mombeyarara and Gumbo.

Prosecuting is Nyikadzino Machingura.

Case Continues for Three Zinasu Activists’:

Three ZINASU activists Pride Mukono, Tryvine Musokeri and Tinashe Mutimbanyoka appeared before a Gweru Magistrate on the 12th of July for the continuation of trial. The three are facing charges of assault and violating the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) .Their charges rose after addressing students at the Midlands State University. They were addressing students on student grants and loans as well as other issues that affect students at the university .Their case will continue on the 16th of July as state witnesses will continue giving their testimonies.
