Six Masvingo activists Maxwell Hlongwani, Brian Chimwayi, Christopher Mutema, Amos Mutema, Terrance Moyo and Tatenda Dziva appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Mr Mudzongachiso on the 16th of July. The six are facing charges of public violence after protesting against the suspension of SRC Elections that were supposed to be held last semester. They were also protesting against students who were made to defer because they had failed to clear their fee arrears. They were arrested on the 8th of May and detained at Masvingo Central Police Station for three nights and were released on the 11th of May 2012.
Trial will continue on the 25th of July when cross examination for the six will continue.
The prosecutor is Mr B Tandirai whilst their defence lawyer is Mr C Maboke.
Case Continues for Three Zinasu Activists’:
Three ZINASU activists Pride Mukono, Tryvine Musokeri and Tinashe Mutimbanyoka appeared before a Gweru Magistrate on the 16th and 19th of July for the continuation of trial. The three are facing charges of assault and violating the Public Order and Security Act (POSA). Their charges arose after addressing students at the Midlands State University. They were addressing students on student grants and loans as well as other issues that affect students at the university. Their case will continue on the 24th of July as state witnesses will continue giving their testimonies.
Judgment Date Set for ZINASU Activist:
ZINASU Student activist Pride Mkono appeared before a Harare magistrate Masinire on the 17th of July for the continuation of his trial. The defense witnesses Tinashe Mutimbanyoka and Tinashe Chisaira were cross examined. Initially Pride was facing charges of public violence which were later merged with malicious damage to property and assault. He is facing charges of public violence emanating from the disturbances that rocked the UZ Student Executive Council election. The latter charges were brought about by the UZ Security Guards’.
The judgement date was set for the 31st of July.
Prosecuting is Mr Mukumbiri and the defense lawyer is Mr Masiye.
Six ZINASU Activists’ Case Postponed:
Six ZINASU activists Pride Mkono, Tinashe Mtyaso, Tinashe Chisaira, Francis Mufambi, Tryvine Musokeri and Joram Chikwadze appeared before Harare Magistrate Don Ndirowei on the 18th of July for the continuation of their trial. The six are facing charges of Disorderly Conduct in a public place as defined in section 41 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. Their case will continue on the 6th of August when the cross examination of defense starts.
It is the state’s case that on the 21st of March this year, the six together with about 30 other accomplices who are still at large gathered outside the Magistrates’ court in solidarity with Welcome Zimuto, Antoneta Choto, Munyaradzi Gwisai, Edson Chakuma, Hopewell Gumbo and Tatenda Mombeyarara whose sentence was to be handed down that day. It is alleged the ZINASU activists were singing obscene songs and chanting slogans, they also threw fliers inscribed, “Freedom for Zimuto, Choto, Gwisai, Chakuma, Mombeyarara and Gumbo.
Prosecuting is Nyikadzino Machingura and the defense lawyer is Obey Shava.
