The campaign dubbed, 1st Time Voter Generation (X1G) is aimed to mobilise youths throughout the country to register as voters and exercise their voting rights in future elections in the country.
Speaking at the launch, a representative of the youth organisations, Liberty Bhebhe who is also the director of the National Youth Development (N.Y.DT) said Zimbabwean youths encounter numerous challenges when they want to register as voters.
" The challenges range from failure to acquire documentation for one to be a registered voter such as ID, prove of residents and related administrative hindrances from the registration officials .Critically youths lack information with regards to the importance of voting and the provisions for continuous registration ," said Bhebhe.
Bhebhe said it is disappointing to note that less than 34% of registered voters in the country are below 35 years of age when youths in the country constitute more than 50% of the total country's population.
"Today the youths in Zimbabwe have agreed to break the barriers that have historically limited them from exercising their universal suffrage gained at our independence. X1G is a peaceful celebration of youth vibrancy," said Bhebhe.
He said under the campaign, the youth organisations have facilitated a nationwide process which targets all young people regardless of their political and socio-economic status.
"All youths should receive unbiased information on voter registration, timing location requirements and any relevant information on the process,"
he added. Some of the youth organisations which were represented at the launch include Platform for Youth Development, NYDT, Youth Agenda Trust and the Youth Forum Trust and Youth.
