According to court papers filed at the Bulawayo High Court, Jamist is suing for $50,000 after one of the revenue authority’s employees destroyed a consignment of potatoes under unclear circumstances. Biti is being sued in his capacity as the responsible minister.
The court heard that Tafadzwa Charamba, a Zimra employee stationed at Beitbridge Border Post, in January confiscated and ordered the destruction of the potatoes, which had been imported from South Africa. The company insists that it had all the relevant documents.
“Due to the First Respondents’ failure to act expediently, the plaintiff’s potatoes which are high highly perishable, all went bad and could no longer be sold and were as a result destroyed. The plaintiff has suffered unnecessary financial loss due to First Respondent’s negligence and inefficiency,” said Jamist Company through their lawyers in the court papers.
The Deputy Registrar has given the Respondents 10 days to respond. Failure to do so will see the case going before a judge as undefended.
