Mashingadze was arrested by officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Law and Order section and taken to Harare Central Police Station facing allegations of criminally defaming former Zifa Chief Executive Officer Henrietta Rushwaya.

Mashingaizde was later released after statements in relation to the case were recorded from him. Rushwaya was not immediately available for comment as she is said to be in the Middle East on business.

A Law and Order detail confirmed Mashingaidze had been arrested, saying investigations were underway and he would be brought to court in due course.

Allegations against Mashingaidze are that on 12 July he issued a statement to the media alleging that Rushwaya and two national team players, Knowledge Musona and Ovidy Karuru, had been involved in fixing the World Cup matches between the Warriors and Guinea played at the National Sports Stadium on 3 June and between the Warriors and Mozambique on 10 June.

Mashingaidze further accused the three of meeting at Rushwaya’s offices a few days after the matches for the purpose of match fixing.

The three have denied the accusations with Rushwaya going as far as making a public statement to deny the allegations.

In addition to that, Musona has since announced his resignation from the Zimbabwe national team unless the Zimbabwe Football Association publicly withdraws the allegations.

Repeated attempts to contact Mashingaidze were fruitless.
