The 32-year-old man from Unit F denied two counts of rape when his trial began before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Sandra Mupindu.
He was convicted after a full trial. Mupindu slapped him with a 20-year prison term, but set aside three years on condition of good behaviour.
When passing the sentence, Mupindu said the man breached the trust bestowed on him by the girl, as her father. She said rape was a serious offence and attracted a custodial sentence.
The prosecution proved that on January 27, 2012, the girl was raped when her mother left her in the custody of her father in order to look for menial work. After the rape, the man threatened to assault his daughter if she revealed the ordeal.
