Chiefs show Zanu allegiance

Chiefs at a recent Heroes Gala in Gutu openly showed their allegiance to Zanu (PF) by raising clenched fists in front of the crowd.

Chief Gutu, Chief Selinda, Chief Nemukaro, and Chief Murinye were among the seven chiefs who made the gesture.

“This is not the time or the place,” said a local man who attended the gala. “We are here to party and remember our heroes. These people (chiefs) want to turn it into a rally. Not all people here are supporters of Zanu (PF). We love our musicians, that is why we are here. It does not mean that all fallen heroes were Zanu (PF) too.”

Last week, an MDC-T rally was banned after the police said the party should seek clearance from the local chiefs.

The MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti and other senior party officials were due to address rallies in the districts of Kazangarare, Kenzamba and Makonde, which are located in the Zanu (PF) stronghold.

MDC-T spokesman Douglas Mwonzora described the development as “totally outrageous and unacceptable” and said the party would fight the decision. The organizing secretary Nelson Chamisa insisted the rallies would go ahead in the future.
