According to Prosecutor Tafadzwa Mpariwa, the magistrate then ordered the release of the four acting on the improper influence of bribery. The granting of the bail was unknown to the state. The matter came to light when the four told the police what had happened. Gweru Magistrate, Morgan Nhemadire, is expected to preside over the trial.

Corrupt magistrate jailed
Barely a month after a public prosecutor was jailed for receiving bribes, a local magistrate has been arrested on charges of corruption. The magistrate, Crispen James Mberewere, is being accused of taking bribes from suspects detained at the Gokwe Remand Prison. On June 12, he retrieved a document detailing the offences of four suspects: Stewart Seramwe, Anafi Charuma, Ganizani Anderson Phiri and Petros Sibanda who had been held in remand prison. The suspects were accused of extortion and theft.
