Council battles to pay workers

The City of Harare is struggling to raise workers’ salaries every month and is incurring a bank overdraft of more than $2.5 million each time it pays its employees.

City spokesperson, Leslie Gwindi, downplayed the financial crisis at council, saying it was nothing serious.

“We do struggle here and there and sometimes we lag behind in some of our payments but we are fine,” he said.

He denied that council owed Harare Municipal Medical Aid Society $5 million. “If they want to debate that, they should come to us. We do not debate our financials in public,” he said.
