The matter arose after some of the employees discovered that there was a discrepancy on the payroll where workers of the same grades got different salaries.
While others were being paid $50 a month, their workmates were being secretly paid $252 and other allowances.
The employees, represented by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions and their leader Liniar Msipa, took the matter to Gweru Labour Court Judge Justice Maxwell Takuva who ruled that the city fathers were supposed to pay the affected workers.
The outstanding dues stretched from 1 November 2009 to 31 July 2010, amounting to $156 485.32.
The council responded by filing an application before the Bulawayo High Court contesting the matter on the basis that council coffers were dry.
However, the Bulawayo High Court Judge, Misheck Cheda, has thrown out the council’s application upholding the arbitrary award compelling payments of the outstanding funds.
