Court case stalled

A court case involving Vice President John Nkomo’s former chief security officer has been stalled after important documents went missing.

Sigogo, as the officer is more commonly known, has been accused of shooting and wounding Patrick Masunda at Jijima Lodge in the Gwayi Conservancy in 2009. Masunda’s brother, Langton, is a safari operator who has been involved in a land dispute with Nkomo.

A notorious former Zipra combatant, Sigogo was also arrested and released in 2001 in connection with the abduction and killing of war veteran leader, Cain Nkala.

The trial failed to take off last week after the medical report and evidence from a key witness went missing.

“We went to the Hwange magistrate courts on Monday for the routine trial of the case but one of the prosecutors told us that the trial could not proceed because the medical report and the evidence from my brother who witnessed the shooting could not be located,” said Masunda.

“We wonder how these important documents cannot be located. We hope the documents are going to be located as soon as possible so that justice can take its course.”

Nkomo has been locked in a marathon court battle to wrestle the 611.79 hectare safari lodge from Masunda. Masunda finally lost the battle after the Supreme Court two months ago dismissed Masunda’s appeal against a default judgment entered by the High Court in favour of Nkomo last year.
