The Zimbabwean flag bearer was way off the pace managing to record a time of 2:11:13 minutes against 2:07:57 for winner Ye Shiwen of China.
Australia’s Alicia Courts was second with a time of 2:08:15 while Caitlin Leverenz was third on 2:08:95. Former Olympic champion and Coventry’s long term rival Stephan Rice of Australia fared better in fourth position.
The only other swimmers that Coventry managed to beat were Hannah Miley of Great Britain and Katinka Hosszu of Hungary.
This is Coventry’s second poor show after finishing seventh in the 100 metre backstroke and leaves Zimbabwe with a slim chance of coming home with a medal from the London sporting extravaganza.
Coventry now focuses on Thursday’s 200 metre backstroke her best event to date having won gold medals at both the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece, and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
Unlike in the past, the Zimbabwean has now reduced her participation and will this year compete in three events only. The 200 metre backstroke is her last event after coming from injury and sickness.

This girl is 28 years old- a decade older than some of her competitors! This is her 4th olyimpic. She’s recently come out of injury and illness. I think we can all disagree with you by saying “good show, Kirsty”
