Dabengwa was quoted in a local weekly as having described Tsvangirai as “a little Chiluba,” but the former Zapu intelligence supremo has flatly denied ever saying this. The late Frederick Chiluba was the president of Zambia and rose to political prominence on the back of his involvement in trade unionism, like Tsvangirai. He was president from 1991 to 2001 and died in 2011. “The journalist I talked to never asked me directly about my perception of the Prime Minister or whether I would go to a meeting if he asked me. Of course I would go.

‘Our relationship is anything but frosty’

“I never said Tsvangirai was a little Chiluba. The reporter sought to attract readers by twisting my words,” said Dabengwa in an interview with The Zimbabwean.

He said he had respect for the Premier. “My relationship with the Prime Minister is anything but frosty or bad. I met him when we were flying to Bulawayo. We exchanged numbers and he has invited me to call him whenever I come to Harare,” Dabengwa said.
