Drought threatens national herd

Livestock in Matebeleland South is under serious threat amid revelations that at least 10 cattle die every week due to hunger caused by drought.

In an interview, Chief Bango of Sontala told The Zimbabwean that dams, rivers and pastures had dried up.

“Hunger this year is very serious among both livestock and humans as cows die every week due to hunger. The farms we were given by the government don’t have pastures or water, so people are feeding their cattle, goats, sheep, chickens and donkeys at home,” said Bango.

He added that they were not dipping their cattle because they were too weak.

“Dip tanks are there but because of the cattle’s condition, we are not dipping them. Instead, we are spraying them. Our cattle are so thin that they are being sold at a meager price of $150. This is down from $500 to $700,’’ he said.

The chief urged the government to come up with long-term strategies to avert hunger in perennially arid areas.
